Tattoo ink is deposited in the dermis layer of the skin. This layer is located beneath the epidermis and above the subcutaneous layer. The dermis is where the ink is effectively trapped, allowing the tattoo to remain visible over time. The reason for depositing ink in the dermis is that this layer contains a network of connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves which supports skin structure, and it is less prone to regeneration compared to the epidermis. While the epidermis is continually renewed and shed, the cells in the dermis do not regenerate as frequently, ensuring that the tattoo remains stable and permanent. Understanding this distinction is crucial since tattoos placed within the epidermis would fade quickly, while those in the dermis maintain their integrity. The subcutaneous layer, which is deeper than the dermis, predominantly contains fat and connective tissue and is not suitable for tattoo ink, as it would lead to inconsistent results and rapid fading. The term "superficial layer" often refers to the outermost sections of the epidermis and, as such, is not appropriate for tattoo ink placement.
